When educator, activist, and beloved friend Guy Kuttner died unexpectedly, Zev heard his voice imploring him to sing of the land they both love. Zev put his pen to the task of meeting Guy's challenge, confronting mortality and loss as he ventured to understand our connection to the land. At its heart, this endeavor weaves history and poetry into the modern state and the everyday lives of those who dwell behind the redwood curtain. The poem is blended with historic photographs from the HSU Library Special Collections, most of which have never before been seen by the public. HSU and College of the Redwoods lecturer and indie publisher CM Phillips reviewed thousands of historic photographs, assisted by Ashley Schumann, incorporating nearly fifty of them into her handsome design. Contemporary, yet timeless, images were contributed by photographers Thomas B. Dunklin and Martin Swett.</p>
