Ses deux enfants lui rendent visite mais ce sont bien les souvenirs du passé qui accompagnent chaque geste, chaque détail au seuil de la mort. Il y a par exemple l'image de ce lac, près du kibboutz où Hemda est née, qui s'impose encore avec force à sa conscience. Les traces plus douloureuses de sa longue vie aussi, qui se glissent dans sa mémoire sans qu'elle puisse s'en libérer : son père trop exigeant, un mariage sans amour, puis cette difficulté à aimer équitablement ses deux enfants, Avner et Dina. Ces deux derniers passent beaucoup de temps avec leur mère depuis l'hospitalisation. Avner, le fils adoré, y rencontre une femme venue dire au revoir à son mari mourant, et entame une étrange relation avec elle. Quant à Dina, la fille mal aimée, elle ne sait comment gérer l'éloignement de sa propre fille pour qui elle a pourtant sacrifié sa carrière. Débordée par le besoin de donner cet amour à quelqu'un, elle se met en tête d'adopter, envers et contre tous. Son désir inébranlable de renforcer son foyer pour y accueillir un autre enfant risque bien de faire éclater sa famille. Zeruya Shalev sait parler comme personne des relations mystérieuses qui se tissent entre parents et enfants. Dans une langue puissante, elle évoque la colère, le ressentiment, la frustration et la peur qui construisent les familles autant que l'amour et le bonheur d'être ensemble. Ce qui reste de nos vies est certainement son roman le plus envoûtant.</p>
