What Makes a Teacher Great?

<center>WHAT MAKES A TEACHER GREAT?</center> When Time magazine featured Triton College of River Grove, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, as an outstanding and innovative college, its citizens applauded the faculty who made it happen. The good news continued when the U.S. Offi ce of Education singled out Triton as the most rapidly growing college of the nation. It has been said many times, "Great teachers change the lives of millions of students for the better and forever." These teachers are described as exciting, genuine, influential, motivating and visionary. Students flock to their classroom to learn new skills and to hear their inspiring messages. After graduating, their students are able to serve families, communities and the nation, far better than their contemporaries. Nineteen master teachers, selected by the college's founding president, Herbert Zakary Zeitlin, tell the story of their lives, why they became teachers, the highlights and low points of their careers, and who helped them along the way. <HR WIDTH="50%" SIZE="3"> <center>Pioneer Star Teachers Look Back </center> Triton itself has been my Harvard, my Julliard, and my Carnegie Hall. It has served as my vehicle of artistic expression. How could I have asked for more. Dr. Eugene L. Schlaback, Music Much of my present time has been spent in volunteering in women's golf programs in Illinois and in Arizona. I have done much traveling. Linda Breuer, Business & Secetarial Science Clara Chan spent endless hours solving student and faculty concerns with high success. She had a good understanding of how cultural diversity impacts students, faculty and the college. She used this understanding in her role as dean. Ina Latiner, Nursing I can truly say the days at Triton College were the most fulfilling of my educational career. Although I never had a position in my adult life that I did not like, the work at the college exceeded them all. It was not a job but a wonderful experience.
