Welcome to our inaugural issue of The Cabinet. This issue serves as a fiction annex with selections by Zachary Benavidez, former temporary editor-in-chief of the Potomac Review. Just as the American president takes counsel from his cabinet advisors, the editor-in-chief of a literary journal takes suggestions from a board of associate editors, hence the name (which also seems appropriate for our suburban-Washington location). Our intention with this issue is to recognize that, now and again, genre editors will amass selections of works that deserve publication, works that can be celebrated in a special themed issue of their own. The Cabinet provides that space for us, and the first issue's theme is "loss."
