This book starts with the story of the chance meeting on Mount Rainer that led to Curtis' involvement on the Harriman Alaskan expedition, and ultimately, to the North American Indian.

Though this book and slip cover weigh over 13 pounds, the book itself is "Used-Like New" condition. Put this book out on your coffee table or in your private collection and people will think it's brand new. All corners and edges are square and the binding is solid. The pages are pristine. The slip-cover also has square corners and edges. It looks terrific as well, though there are some surface blemishs in a couple of places. Mostly, the slip-cover is still shiny as new. This is a book in rare condition looking for a collector that wanting that capstone book. Even at this price, this book will go fast.

Mathew Brady devoted himself utterly to his objective, sinking all of his personal funds and heavy loans into the effort to equip his photographers with horse drawn mobile darkrooms with which they could follow the Union forces and capture their exploits throughout the four year conflict. When the war was over, however, his customers shied away from death and destruction, preferring lighter, more agreeable fare, and Brady's business went bust owing money to scores of creditors. As with many artists before him and since, the true value of his work was not fully appreciated until after his death, broke and alone, in 1896.

In 1906 J.P. Morgan commissioned Edward S. Curtis to produce a series of books depicting Native American life. Curtis’ goal was to not just photograph but to document as much of traditional Native life as possible before it disappeared. During his project, Curtis made over 10,000 wax cylinder recordings of Native languages and music, and took over 40,000 photographs of peoples from over eighty tribes. He recorded tribal lore and history, and he described traditional foods, housing, garments, recreation, ceremonies, and funeral customs. He wrote biographical sketches of tribal leaders, and his material, in most cases, is the only recorded history of these amazing peoples. Curtis had a remarkable knack for portraiture.
