Zhang Huan, born in 1965 in the Chinese province Honan, was among the first artists in China who turned to performance art at the beginning of the 1990s. His artwork continues to explore the tragedies of the human condition and the spiritual essence of Buddhism.

Best known for her performance critiques of art institutions, art publications, art sponsorship, and cultural transfer--think subversive museum docent--Andrea Fraser is one of the more prominent artists to raise institutional criticism to the level of art itself.
