This is a comprehensive, lavishly illustrated record of London's inter-war church-building activity. It shows the rich variety of Anglican churches erected for the capital's expanding population, some of them by famous and distinguished architects such as N.F. Cachmaille-Day, Sir Edward Maufe, Sir Charles Nicholson and A.E. Wiseman. This period of church-building is neither popular nor much discussed, yet the present study shows how many of the churches are of real importance and quality. It offers an illuminating introduction to the background of interwar church-building in the capital, an entry for every church erected between 1915 and 1945, a table of the architects responsible, and both interior and exterior photographs for almost every building.

This book is a sequel to an earlier volume by the same authors on Anglican church-building in Greater London between 1915 and 1945. In the post-war period as many as 250 new churches were built in the area, a very large corpus of work which has been largely overlooked by commentators. Many of the buildings were replacements for ones destroyed in the war or of large Victorian churches in the suburbs. The range of buildings is wide and includes work by well-known architects N.F. achemaille-Day and Maguire &amp; Murray as well as many lesser figures who deserve to be better known. The book consists of a wide-ranging introduction followed by a gazetteer in which most churches are illustrated by both an exterior and an interior view.

The Society of the Faith was founded in 1905 to promote a catholic (and ecumenical) understanding of the Church of England. In 1916, the Society created Faith Craft, a subsidiary company dedicated to the best design in every area of church furnishing. Its products were also meant to be affordable by ordinary parishes - unlike the extravagances of craftsmen like William Burges. Faith Craft used a wide variety of designers in wood, metal, textiles, and stained glass. This work became ubiquitous in the Church of England, but has never before been chronicled. Martin Travers, stained glass painter and church furnisher, was born in Margate, Kent, on 19 February 1886. He died on 25 July 1948 in his studio in Colet Gardens, Barons Court, West London. At the time of his unexpected demise he had a well regarded reputation. His life was in fact full of paradoxes and many myths have grown up around him, which closer scrutiny of the available evidence makes clear are almost all unsubstantiated. This book provides an objective and thoroughly researched account of Travers and his output. In the process it establishes Travers as an important designer and architect and as a major contributor to the art and design produced within the Anglo-Catholic Movement in the first half of the nineteenth century.
