As a former newspaper man, foreign correspondent, magazine editor, novelist, screenwriter, and author, Burton Wohl could hardly be a less likely candidate for pioneer living on a wilderness island in Canada’s western rainforest. But a dozen years of Los Angeles smog, Beverly Hills traffic snarls and the mind-blowing frenzy of Hollywood movie studios sent him ultimately flying in search of peace, quiet and sanity. All of which were to be found on Read Island, a small, richly forested patch of wilderness on Canada’s western shore—a hundred miles or so north of Vancouver. There, together with his wife, this Hollywood fugitive settled in to build his own house,  boats, out buildings, wells, gardens, green house—and even the island’s very first flush toilet—in the company of some fifty adults, kids, cats and dogs, occasional wolves, cougar, deer, black bear and killer whales. What followed was better than twenty years of a splendid, beautiful and exciting life, many friendships, the envy of visiting friends, and finally, a broken back in a tractor accident. So, born on Long Island, having lived on Read Island, author Wohl has settled on yet another island—to wait the final tide.
