This volume examines the gangster film in its historical context with an emphasis on the ways the image of the gangster has adapted and changed as a result of socio-cultural circumstances. From its origins in Progressive-era reforms to its use as an indictment of corporate greed, the gangster film has often provided a template for critiquing American ideas and values concerning individualism, success, and business acumen. The gangster genre has also been useful in critically examining race and ethnicity in American culture in terms of "otherness." Films studied include Musketeers of Pig Alley (1912), The Racket (1928), The Captive City (1952), The Godfather, Part Two (1974), Goodfellas (1990), and Killing Them Softly (2012).

When General Douglas MacArthur reached the Philippines in late 1944 to begin the liberation of the islands from the Japanese, thousands of American and British prisoners held in camps there were put onto ships for transport to Japan. The conditions aboard these ships were atrocious, and they would come to be known as hellships by the prisoners who suffered aboard them. The men who boarded the Japanese transport ships Shinyo Maru and Arisan Maru suffered greatly, but their deaths came relatively quickly when the unmarked ships were sunk by American submarines. However, the men who boarded the transport ship Oryoku Maru for the voyage from Subic Bay, Philippines to Moji, Japan in 1944 took what can only be described as a voyage into hell. These Americans, having lived through nearly three yeas of Japanese prison camps, died in the course of a broken journey seven weeks long. They died of Japanese bullets and American bombs, of suffocation, dehydration, disease, starvation and murders. Some went insane. The book is printed in 9" x 12" format, containing 334 pages with 126 photographs/biographies of West Point graduates who boarded Japanese hellships. The photographs/biographies are from the Howitzer yearbooks, from the year of graduation, 1917-1941. The book contains beautiful graphics from the Howitzer yearbooks that symbolize the motto of the U.S. Military Academy honor, duty, and country which is imbedded in its coat of arms. The book also includes the biographies of all 158 West Point graduates who died at the hands of the Japanese during World War II.
