Secret Service, 1895, Action packed Civil War play by actor-playwright William GilletteOpening in Philadelphia in May of 1895 Secret Service was not a great success until Gillette started to act the leading role the following year.This romance during the Civil War emphasizes the realistic acting of Gillette and the suggestion of an Aristotelian Unity of Action as the Union spy hero is "saved" by the daughter of a Confederate general. Both the acting of Secret Service and the plot have made this play one of the best of Civil War plays.
