From "the coming of the English" into the Romanized province of Britain (traditionally dated to the year 449) to the Norman Conquest of 1066, it was the Anglo-Saxons who controlled the territory of England. In this book, the author draws on a range of evidence to offer an analysis of their way of life. She examines the basic structures of society - the hierarchy descending from the King, his court and the noblemen to the churls and slaves - the systems of administration and law and the role and organization of the Church. Britain may have been at the edge of the civilized world, yet the Anglo-Saxons produced a distinguished body of literature, Latin and vernacular, and many important works of art.

This 1930 volume contains the original texts, with translations and commentaries, of the great majority of surviving Anglo-Saxon wills drawn up in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The documents are of special interest for the light they cast on the families and connections of those who made the wills, and on the ways in which the testators managed the disposition of their lands and other possessions. The reissue of Professor Whitelock's book is complemented by reissues of Florence Harmer's Select English Historical Documents of the Ninth and Tenth Centuries (1914), and of Agnes Jane Robertson's Anglo-Saxon Charters (1939, 2nd edition 1956). Between them, the three volumes represent the surviving corpus of Anglo-Saxon documents in the vernacular, to set beside the corpus of royal diplomas (in Latin), and the corpus of Anglo-Saxon legislation, and to serve at the same time as evidence of the uses of written English in the Anglo-Saxon period.

Charters constitute one of the most valuable sources of information for our knowledge of Anglo-Saxon England in the period between c. 700 and 1066. The great majority are in Latin, but about 200 (of the surviving corpus of about 1500) are in Old English, dating from the ninth, tenth and eleventh centuries. One hundred years ago H. M. Chadwick, Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge, conceived the idea of producing a new edition of the vernacular charters, furnished with translations and detailed notes, as a contribution towards a larger end. The charters were divided up among three of his students, and over a period of 25 years, from 1914 to 1939, they produced the volumes which in combination still represent the only comprehensive edition of these most interesting texts. The volumes are made available again, as a set, with introductions by Simon Keynes, and with concordances to the modern online catalogue.
