Later during the Battle of Pusan, Korea, he directed American mortar fire into advancing North Korean forces stabilizing the US lines while shot in the arm and chest. Before leaving the battlefield for personal medical attention, he worked his way down the battle line encouraging his men and organizing the evacuation of the wounded.
