In 1945-50 Mies van der Rohe built the weekend house "Farnsworth House" in Plano, Illinois. Situated on the banks of a river, this house is constructed out of steel and glass and captivates with its clear proportions and reduction of the structure to its essence. The surrounding landscape provides a direct context. Werner Blaser who worked together with Mies van der Rohe, presents a vivid picture of this house, enlivened by his personal knowledge. Together with comments on the architecture and technology, the book is complemented by the author's personal experiences of working with Mies van der Rohe and impressions from Peter Palumbo, a former inhabitant of Farnsworth House.

<p>Am 860 Lake Shore Drive, in bester Lage direkt am Michigan See, entstand 1948–50 ein zweiteiliges Wohnhochhaus von Mies van der Rohe. Die 26-geschossigen Skelettbauten aus Stahl und Glas sind im rechten Winkel zueinander angeordnet und bestehen aus stockwerkshohen Glasflächen. Die „Lake Shore Drive Apartments” gehören zu den ersten Wohnhochhäusern der Moderne und markieren mit ihrer Wohnfunktion einen wichtigen Schritt in der Geschichte der Architektur. Wie in Band 1 der „Mies-Klassiker” wird die Entwicklung dieses Hochhauses, anhand informativer Texte und reichen Fotomaterials von Werner Blaser, über eine längere Zeitspanne dokumentiert. Ein Essay des Bewohners Masami Takayama vermittelt einen Eindruck der Wohnsituation, Textbeiträge von Mies runden dieses Buch ab.</p>

When architects incorporate art into their projects, when artists involve themselves in the constraints of the construction industry, the results can be immensely fruitful as this striking new building in the Basle cityscape goes to prove. Margherita Spiluttinis photographs which were taken especially for this publication show the structure in all its cool elegance.</p>
