C. F. W. (Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm) Walther (October 25, 1811 - May 7, 1887) has been described as a man who sacrificed his homeland, his health and nearly his life for the freedom to speak freely, to believe freely, and to live freely. He was dedicated to his Church and the faith for those he loved. He was the first President of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and its most influential theologian.

He remains the most influential theologian to arise from the Synodical Conference. He is most well known for his book "The Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel," and his contributions to the debate on God's eternal election. Though a dogmatic thinker, Walther was primarily a pastoral theologian. He served at Trinity Lutheran Church in St Louis from 1841 until his death in 1877. This volume is a compilation of several of Walther's sermons. These sermons are edifying as well as theologically rigorous. This is a translation of the collection of lectionary-based devotions for the entire church taken from Walther's sermons and published by CPH in 1894. The translation aims to retain particular relevance for modern readers. Beginning with the first week of Advent, God Grant It provides a daily devotion for each day in the year, placing particular significance on the church year. Through these classic sermons of Walther, the modern reader will be reminded that God's mercies are new every day, that His mercies are ours by the work of our Lord Jesus Christ.
