The poems, loosely narrative, follow her struggle to navigate the new country of marriage, and to speak the new language of self, in a land of reinvention. Emily Wall lived aboard her Tayana 37 sailboat in Vancouver, British Columbia for four years, inspiring the poems in this collection. During that time she and her husband cruised a thousand miles from the southern end of Puget Sound north to Desolation Sound, exploring the Gulf and San Juan Islands as well as most of the B.C. Coast. In the fourth summer she sailed from Vancouver to Juneau, Alaska, where she currently lives with her husband and three daughters. She is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Alaska Southeast. This is her second poetry collection.

In this chapbook, O'Keeffe offers readers details of her life-as an artist, as a wife to a man who both helped and harmed her, and as an older woman who found her spiritual home. Each poem is ekphrastic, written in response to pieces of her art; epistolic, in homage to the many letters she wrote during her lifetime; and persona, based on factual events and experiences. Fist is part of a trilogy of chapbooks written in the voices of three powerful and influential women: Mary, mother of Jesus, artist Georgia O'Keeffe, and chef and food activist Alice Waters.

The persona poems in FIG come to us in the voice of chef and food activist Alice Waters. In these poems, Waters offers us advice and encouragement: how to eat, how to take care of our bodies, and how to feed our communities. Waters, whose early life was shaped by the social justice protests in Berkeley, is responsible for changing the way we eat in America. She started a restaurant that introduced farm-to-table eating to Americans. She brought us wood-fired pizzas and is at the center of the Slow Food Movement in the U.S. Along with Michelle Obama, she has launched the reform movement for school lunches. And yet, even today, she walks in her restaurant tasting, moving a fork, lighting a lamp, and striving to create the perfect meal for those who come to Chez Panisse. To reflect her deep care and precision as a chef, each of the poems in this book is written in a poetic form.
