Excerpt from Forewood: This book is unique in that it is the first time Hazelden has published anything about being addicted to a specific drug or behavior, in this case nicotine, where the author is a practicing addict. All our other materials are written by people who are understood to be in recovery from addiction to the drug or behavior they are writing about. The only exception to this are the works by treatment or writing professionals who, while not necessarily in a recovery program themselves, are assumed not to be practicing addicts.

The reason for this unwritten policy is simple. Our mission is and always has been to support, reinforce, and nurture readers' 12 Step recovery programs.

And yet, assuming that our authors are a fairly representative sampling of people in recovery programs, it is safe to say that a good percentage of them were using the drug nicotine while they were writing these materials for us. A visit to most 12 Step meetings and drug treatment centers will confirm the prevalence of nicotine use by people, including treatment counselors, who otherwise are abstinent from mood-altering chemicals and consider themselves recovering.

This is not to point a finger but simply to illustrate how uniquely this drug is still regarded in the recovery community, not to mention our culture at large. While few would dispute that nicotine is a powerfully addictive chemical, few also apply the same standards to it as to drugs with a fraction of nicotine's destructiveness and prevalence.

This is exactly the contradiction that Ellen Walker describes so eloquently in this book and, in fact, embodies in her personal struggle. Filled with insight into the addictive process, cognizant of her powerlessness over nicotine, still she smokes. It is almost as if she and the many other tobacco users like her are dangling in the middle of the First Step - well aware of their powerlessness but still in the process of defining what unmanageability is.
