The inspiration for Writers Camp @ ZSR came after a group of ZSR librarians heard Jane McGonigal present “Find the Future: The Game” during the American Library Association’s 2014 Annual Conference. The ZSR Library wanted to provide an opportunity to engage students interested in writing outside of the classroom and to offer these students the opportunity to become published authors. During the Summer of 2015, The Writers Camp @ ZSR committee was formed and the Writing Center and other University partners were brought in to help plan, market, and lead the event on Friday, January 29th 2016. Students were invited to apply to participate in Writers Camp during the Fall of 2015, and forty-one student authors were selected for the overnight Writers Camp. The works they created that night are published in this volume. The Z. Smith Reynolds Library provided the staff and venue for the event, the WFU Writing Center tutors offered assistance to the student authors throughout the event, and costs associated with the event and book were paid for by a grant from the WFU Provost’s Fund for Academic Innovation. The chapters herein began their lives as papers produced as part of the work required in the senior seminar 'The Rise and Fall of Empires' taught by Professor David Coates in the Department of Politics and International Affairs at Wake Forest University in the fall semester 2018. Each member of that senior seminar group took responsibility for one chapter in what follows, and liaised with each other, the professor and the editors, to create as far as possible an integrated and comprehensive set of studies on the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the creation of the modern Middle East.

This volume provides lived insights into what it takes to “make it” in Washington, D.C., flavored with a Demon Deacon perspective. The fifteen interview featured Wake Forest alumni who span the generations from those in the finale of successful careers to those beginning their life’s work. The chapters are the exclusive work of the Wake Washington Fellows, who identified whom they would interview, made logistical arrangements, and transcribed and edited their interactions. In most instances, the synergy of a student’s enthusiasm and the interviewee’s expertise resulted in magical moments. You will find important takeaways from each interview, even as different interviews will likely speak to different readers, perhaps reflecting of their own stages in the journey. Almost without the authors’ realization, the interviewees composed insightful narratives that run the gamut of accomplishment and career paths. From professional politicians to artists, from those who agitate to those brokering agreement, the interviews reflect the range of alumni who compose Wake Forest’s Washington community.

FROM THE BACK COVER: Rhetoric is not a rainstorm, it is a groundswell. It doesn’t rain down on us from the sky, from those who have authority. Instead, it rises up from the ground, rhetoric is made by the people and groups who employ it. As a student of social movements, I have always felt that it is more our job as scholars to understand the rhetoric as it rises than to push to fit it within our existing conventions and theoretical frameworks. 
Working collaboratively with students, with an emerging generation of scholars, as they re-defined, re-examined, and re-invented rhetoric this semester has solidified my belief in the iterative percolation of the rhetorical tableau. These co-authors urged me to look at conventions with new lenses, to think about the impact of speech in more expansive ways, and to fully divorce myself from any illusion of rhetorical stagnancy. Their passion and creativity enlivened my own rhetorical analysis and I found myself incorporating their interpretations of terms into my own daily rhetorical interpretations.
