Over the course of Aikido training a student will inevitably encounter many difficulties. For instance, practice partners may be 'difficult' or even deliberately obstructive, advice from senior students or teachers might be contradictory, practice principles may seem to be incomprehensible or unattainable, confidence in instructors may be questioned, and so on. Following the same general format as "Aikido, Iron Balls and Elbow Power", "Aikido Body, Mind and Spirit" explores a range of these problems and questions from the point of view of a student training with a fictional Aikido master instructor called Alex Essani. The conversations between Ian, the student, and Alex Essani, the teacher, are inventions that serve to examine training principles, practices and problems. In this book Ian is introduced first to further ideas regarding Aikido practice in the dojo, building on the lessons he learned in "Aikido, Iron Balls and Elbow Power". Subsequently he is encouraged to explore rather less pragmatic ideas relating to mind and spirit.

For centuries Chinese healers have used Acupuncture points to treat a wide range of physical and mental disorders. These points, which are regarded as being key locations in the body’s energy pathways, are said to be connected to the body’s internal organs and when stimulated can cure bodily disorders. Some of these Acupuncture points are also used to produce a calming effect, and others to improve mental acuity. So stimulating Acupuncture points is intended to return the body and mind to a healthy, balanced state. Similarly, Aikido assumes that attackers are temporarily out of balance. Aikido practitioners blend with the attacking energy, and attempt to return it to a balanced state. Thus both Aikido and Acupuncture are based on the same idea of restoring harmony and balance to states of physical or mental disorder. This book explores the idea of combining the two practices. In it the author examines a range of Aikido techniques and exercises that can be easily adapted to allow the stimulation of certain Acupuncture points for the purpose of promoting or restoring body, mind and spirit harmony, or to improve the efficacy of techniques.

The Japanese word kuzushi literally means ‘undermining’ and in the context of martial arts it means destabilising and subsequently unbalancing an attacker as a precursor to the execution of a technique, whether a throw or an immobilisation. The term kuzushi is well-known in Judo circles but, although Aikido techniques also incorporate the use of kuzushi states, in the author’s experience they are rarely identified explicitly by Aikido masters, even though observation reveals very clearly that they are utilising kuzushi states effectively. Awareness of kuzushi adds a new dimension to Aikido practice, giving it a rational basis for the effective execution of all techniques, and without relying at all on uke being passively compliant. This book identifies major kuzushi states and shows their implementation for a range of Aikido techniques.
