This report presents the recommendations of an international group of experts convened by the World Health Organization to consider matters concerning the quality assurance of pharmaceuticals and specifications for drug substances and dosage forms. Of particular relevance to drug regulatory authorities and pharmaceutical manufacturers, this report discusses the latest volume of the International Pharmacopoeia and quality specifications for pharmaceutical substances and dosage forms, as well as quality control of reference materials, good manufacturing practices (GMP), inspection, distribution and trade and other aspects of quality assurance of pharmaceuticals, and regulatory issues. Who Expert Committee on Specifications for Pharmaceutical Preparations: Thirty Eighth Report (Technical Report Series)

This reort presents the recommendations of a WHO Expert Committee commissioned to coordinate activities leading to the adoption of international requirements for the production and control of vaccines and other biologicals and the establishment of international biological reference materials. The report starts with a discussion of general issues brought to the Committee's attention and provides information on the status and development of reference materials for various antibodies, antigens, blood products and related substances, cytokines, growth factors, and endoctrinological substances. The second part of the report, of particular relevance to manufacturers and national regulatory authorities, contains recommendations for the production and quality control of meningococcal group C conjugate vaccines, guidelines for regulatory expectations for clinical evaluation of vaccines, guidelines for the production and quality control of inactivated oral cholera vaccines and guidelines on viral inactivation and removal procedures intended to assure the viral safety of human blood plasma products.

<p>This report presents the conclusions of a Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee convened to evaluate the safety of residues of certain veterinary drugs in food and to recommend maximum levels for such residues in food. The first part considers conslusions on specific toxicological end-points lipid-soluble residues of veterinary drugs with MRLs in milk statistical methods for the estimation of MRLs and the Committee's review and comments on documents provided by Codex Committees. Summaries follow of the Committee's evaluations of toxicological and residue data on a variety of veterinary drugs: five antibacterial agents (cefuroxime chloramphenicol flumequine lincomycin pirlimycin) four insecticides (cyhalothrin cypermethrin and a-cypermethrin doramectin phoxim) and two production aids (melengestrol acetate ractopamine). The Committee's comments on chloramphenicol found at low levels in animal products are also summarized. Annexed to the report is a summary of the Committee's recommendations on these drugs including acceptable daily intakes and proposed maximum residue limits.</p>

This volume contains monographs prepared at the sixty-second meeting of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), which met in Rome, Italy, from 4 to 12 February 2004.The monographs in this volume summarize data on the veterinary drug residues that were evaluated toxicologically by the Committee, which included three antimicrobial agents (cefuroxime, flumequine and pirlimycin), two insecticides (cyhalothrin, and cypermethrin and Ýalpha¨-cypermethrin) and one production aid (ractopamine). The Committee also evaluated the safety of low levels of the antimicrobial agent chloramphenicol in animal products. The data summarized in these monographs served as the basis of the evaluations performed by the Committee.This volume and others in the WHO Food Additives Series contain information that is useful to those who produce and use food additives and veterinary drugs and those involved with controlling contaminants in food, government and food regulatory officers, industrial testing laboratories, toxicological laboratories, and universities.
