This little book was written, in part, many years ago when I was first introduced to the Bennet family in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice by my English Mistress. Being the youngest of seven girls I was, even then, drawn by the similarities between my own sisters and the Bennet girls. I well remember wondering if they, like us, had to do their shar of the cooking - I obviously chose to ignore their mother's reply to Mr. Collins who, having praised the fine dinner, begged to know to which daughter the excellence of its cookery was owing: "But here he was set right by Mrs. Bennet, who assured him with some asperity that they were well able to keep a good cook, and that their daughters had nothing to do in the kitchen."
