<p>Premchand's first Hindi novel, Sevasadan is a bold statement on the political and religious debates about marriage, sexuality, and prostitution, at a time when Indian women were being held up as standard-bearers of a nation in chains. Premchand depicts the hypocrisy of the so-called 'pillars of society', who can stand up as upholders of moral platitudes in public yet sacrifice their orthodox principles behind closed doors. The novel portrays the reality of the newly emerging Hindu-Muslim divide, but also conceives of an ideal community that gives new direction to the life of a fallen woman and allows her to lead a meaningful existence. A hugely popular novel, Sevasadan went through several editions after its first publication in 1918. It is not only a gripping novel but also a sensitive and perceptive document on the lives of young urban men and women at the beginning of the twentieth century. Born in 1911 on the border of Nepal, as a boy Agyeya travelled across India, from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu. Later, while in college in Lahore, Agyeya became an underground revolutionary. He advocated for India's freedom, and a decade later he served as an anti-fascist officer in the British army. In the mid-1940s and early 1950s, Agyeya began his work as a prominent literary figure of a subcontinent torn by independence, partition, nationhood, and the Cold War. It was a time when the Hindi world strove to make Hindi the national language. The Berkeley symposium on which this book is based explored the formations of this period-- of the nation, and of the literary vanguard and movements that were created around and against the figure of Agyeya. But is this the only perspective through which to access Agyeya and his influence? This book is a collection of revised versions of the papers presented at the Berkeley symposium. The symposium had as a task to reappraise Agyeya and his works in and of themselves but also vis-a-vis his contemporaries.

These three essays, by Vasudha Dalmia, explore the ways in which Europeans British colonialists and German philosophers and scholars  appropriated Indian history, religious scholarship, and ritual practice to assert their own relationship to India and Indians, and even more so, their relationship to their own past and sense of present duty, right, and mission. In these European attempts to orient India to their own designs, justifications, and senses of moral worth, or enlightened thinking , Dalmia reveals the complex negotiations between Indian and British forms of knowledge and practice. In her study of the German thinkers, we see how cultural knowledge is not static but becomes a transaction between philosophers whose ideas of India form the basis of their own cultural values.
