This Course on the Lord’s Prayer of Valenin Tomberg came about in the Netherlands during the Second World War. It can be seen from the life-work of Tomberg that the content of the Bible as a whole – the Old Testament, the New Testament and the Revelation of St. John – provides the foundation for his spiritual work and research. The Course on the Lord’s Prayer was formed in such a way, that the address and the Petitions of this prayer communicated by Christ were studied and meditated in weekly rhythms. In this process, the Petitions determined in each case the course of the exercise, while the cor-responding days of the week were used for ongoing deepening in study and meditation. The Course begins with an overview of the entire content. This overview included at the same time daily work involving a first reading through the whole Prayer. The pupil takes his orientation every time anew from this overview, when a further week’s work is about to begin. It is also referred to as ‘preparatory work’.

The Course on the Lord's Prayer is a series of guidelines communicated to Valentin Tomberg in the Netherlands to enable humanity to know consciously its own origin and the origin of the world. The content of the Course is built upon the prayer that was given by Christ. Volume II comprises further meditative work on the organic overview that has been given in Volume I. If a person decides to undertake self-development through a training and education of his soul-forces, the most comprehensive path is the one indicated in the New Testament in the St. Matthew's Gospel (Mt 5, 1-12). Christ's Sermon on the Mount is an enhancement of the working through of the nine bodily sheaths - as developed phenomenologically and presented by Rudolf Steiner in his book "Theosophy" (GA 9). The Sermon on the Mount contains concrete indications as to the forming of the human being's bodily sheaths. And this deepening on the level of content is followed by Tomberg, whereby he places the work under the heading of the 1st Petition of the Lord's Prayer "Hallowed be thy name", and proposes that in the course of concentrated meditative activity a whole week should be devoted to each individual Beatitude. Additionally, Volume II contains the finding and deepening of the experience oft he Passions of Christ as a meditative work on the second petition "Thy kingdom come". This path is connected to the 'I am' words of Christ for harmonization of the 6-petalled lotus-flower "I am the way, the truth and the life".

Part III of the Course on the Lord’s Prayer moves forward to the 3rd, 4th and 5th Petition of this Prayer. By way of an answer to many questions, the following can be said: The working of the astral in the soul-forces, whereby willing, feeling and thinking are bound and mixed together, creates an obstacle to the forming of a connection to man’s essential being. If the human being wishes to structure his soul-forces for the future, he is advised thus by the Guardian of the Threshold: – First separate your will from your wishes. – Then separate your wishes from alien thoughts. – Never indulge in fantasies stemming from lower drives of the soul. – And so, work out of pure thoughts.
