C'est une belle journée d'automne, mais Totoche s'ennuie. Il est prêt à beaucoup de choses pour un peu de compagnie. Même à faire le portemanteau chez Joséphine la taupe, qui vient de s'acheter un manteau mais n'a rien pour l'accrocher. Totoche montre tellement d'enthousiasme et de volubilité dans ses nouvelles fonctions que Joséphine en est vite épuisée. C'est d'un portemanteau qu'elle a besoin, pas d'un moulin à paroles comme Totoche. Alors elle le congédie gentiment. Totoche tente de poursuivre sa carrière de portemanteau chez Lazare. Lazare est un oiseau qui aime la compagnie, il semble enchanté de la présence de Totoche. Mais quand il lui propose une assiette de soupe aux châtaignes, Totoche montre tellement d'enthousiasme - pour la soupe, cette fois - qu'il en oublie son travail. Voilà le manteau de Lazare tout taché. Et Totoche est navré. Doublement navré. Que va-t-il faire maintenant ? Mais au fond, peut-être que Lazare a davantage besoin d'un ami avec qui partager de la soupe que d'un portemanteau ?
