Finalist, 2022 Blue Light Book Award Pat Underwood grew up on an Iowa farm, married her high school sweetheart, and together they raised two sons on a country hillside northwest of Colfax, Iowa where the plentiful wildlife inspired many of her poems. After receiving her college degree at the age of 44, she worked in early education and retired in 2017 from her employment with the State of Iowa. Former publications include two poetry chapbooks - Portraits (Finishing Line Press 2017) and Gatherings (Celestial Light Press 2007). Her play kit The Last Supper (Meriwether Publishing Ltd.; Contemporary Drama Service 1997) travels the nation. Underwood's poems received a 2001 Pushcart Prize Nomination, a 1996 Founder's Award, and a 2002 Founder's Award from the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. This pocket-sized full-colour guide is designed for short-break holidays around Nice with a gastronomic touch. Even if you're not a walker, it's worth having just for the restaurant suggestions, the excursions and the information about local food. The book describes two excursions for all-comers (including the superb narrow-gauge Train de Pignes into the hinterland), plus 12 easy to moderate walks in or easily accessible from Nice, all illustrated with 1:35,000 topographical maps. THE guide to Madeira for more than 30 years and a winner of the Thomas Cook Best Travel Guide Award, this book is by far the most heavily reviewed guide on Amazon, with 86 reviews for the previous edition. It guides the visitor across the island by car and on foot. But it is primarily known as a walking guide. The 'Sunday Times' said, 'A remarkable paperback which may have done more than any other to change the way its readers spend their holidays: this book single-handedly turned levada-walking into something approaching a craze.' Levadas are watercourses that carry rainfall from the mountains to irrigate the cultivated terraces, and they have totally captured the imagination of visitors to the island - whether walkers or not. Many people use the book just to picnic or stroll in the idyllic surroundings beside a levada. Still, the island is one of Europe's top destinations for mountain walks. With this in mind, we've concentrated in this updated 12th edition on re-walking all the high-level routes - especially important in view of last year's path collapse on the major traverse from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. In addition to the 'classics', about half of the 100 different routes in the guide have been rewalked. Naturally all the car tours have been checked as well - and the new edition warns you about major road closures.
