This is a beautiful full colour book, featuring the evocative photography of Bill Reed. It is a remarkable collection of rare colour images that document our railway heritage. Noted railway photographer Bill Reed shows his pin-sharp colour pictures of the last days of Scottish steam for the first time in this lavish, 160 page, hardback book. Bill, now 79, Nottingham-born and an ex loco driver, took colour slides on his many journeys north of the border in late 1950s and early 1960s. In some cases Scotland was the only area operating the once famous Gresley A4 locomotives and Bill wasted no time in capturing them on their last duties. The pictures illustrate steam locomotives trundling along many of the branch lines now long gone; waiting in sleepy stations, long abandoned; as well as pausing on shed or dumped on scrap lines, awaiting their ultimate fate. Bill had access to most areas to take pictures and was not hampered by restrictions and regulations as he would be today. This is much to the reader's advantage as we see shots that would normally be difficult to obtain.He also illustrates how complicated and labour intensive it was operating a steam loco; the vast coal hoppers and water tanks provide examples of this testimony. For easy reference, the book is set out in a simple A-Z format starting with Aberdeen and finishing at Tyndrum Upper station. Noted locations are featured in-between these points, including all the Edinburgh and Glasgow sheds as well as Connel Ferry, Gleneagles, Inverurie and many more. Bill has marvellously captured the post Second World War atmosphere on Scottish railways. If he had his time again he says he would have taken a lot more pictures. But that is no matter, we have enough here to remind us quite clearly what it was like during the last days of Scottish steam.

In both Doncaster District Pubs and the previously published Doncaster Pubs, Peter Tuffrey enlists the help of friends James Edward Day, Eric Braim and Geoff Elvin, and offers the reader as much information about Doncaster’s pubs as possible: the earliest located reference; opening, rebuilding, alteration and demolition dates. He also details interesting facts about the pubs and the landlords who ran them. The accompanying illustrations have come from many sources and include architectural drawings as well as photographs from glass plates and picture postcards. Peter’s favourite pub picture is the one of the Star Inn at Conisbrough. It is an incredibly sharp and well composed picture and betrays nothing of what was to happen several years later. The inn caught fire, was completely destroyed and one of the servant girls perished.Nevertheless, he hopes everyone enjoys the book and Doncaster district pubs have a bright future. He is sure everyone will raise their glasses to that.

The firm of James Simonton & Sons (J.S. & S.) produced thousands of picture postcard views of Doncaster and the surrounding area at the dawn of the twentieth century. James Simonton, born in Dublin in 1861, and founder of the J.S. & S. business, worked during the period 1910 - 1950, which is currently recognised as the heyday of topographical postcard views. The postcard allowed anyone to send a picture of their town, village or street to a relative in any part of the country, and most cost a penny or less and could be posted with a halfpenny stamp. J.S. & S. photographed virtually every street and numerous local events in towns and villages within a 25-mile radius of Doncaster during a time of radical change. Their pictures have outstanding clarity, are beautifully composed and are full of incidental details. Over the years noted Yorkshire author Peter Tuffrey has become adept at discovering treasures from a number of Doncaster's photographers. He has produced books on Edgar Leonard Scrivens and Luke Bagshaw and this new one on J. Simonton & Sons is just as fascinating and visually striking.

When the Great Northern Railway and London &amp; North Eastern Railway operated in Doncaster, it was the most exciting period in the town's history, argues Peter Tuffrey. Yet, if it hadn't been for Doncaster MP Edmund Beckett Denison the railway and the railway workshops may never have come to the area. Having persuaded the GNR to extend their line from London to York through the town, he then coaxed the company to transfer its locomotive repair workshops from Boston to Doncaster. Thereafter, the town's reputation grew: it became known as a place where the latest designs for locomotives and carriages were conceived and brought to life to enrich the nation's railways. Sir Nigel Gresley was the architect of much of this success. Working first from Doncaster and then from his offices in London, he constantly kept in touch with the local Plant Works, as it became known, where many of his outstanding engines, including the Flying Scotsman and Mallard, were produced. Mention must also be made of his marvellous carriages, particularly the Coronation, Silver Jubilee and West Riding sets. These and many more are illustrated in this book. Sadly, the important role Doncaster once played in the country's rail network is now perhaps lost forever. But hopefully this book will go some way to illustrate and record the glorious past of the GNR and LNER in Doncaster.

Born in Doncaster in the 1950s, Peter Tuffrey grew up with the collieries around him: Yorkshire Main at Edlington, Denaby, Cadeby, Rossington and Askern. Although it might have seemed that things would never change, they did, and Peter has now compiled Doncaster's Collieries to commemorate this once-vital part of the town's heritage. Using photographs from his own collection and the archives of local newspapers, Peter examines the histories of thirteen of the pits that once surrounded his home town, from the elaborate ceremonies which were staged to mark the start of work through to the acrimonious disputes with British Coal and the government of Margaret Thatcher, which so often marked the closure of the Doncaster collieries. The result is a fascinating view of a now-lost but widely remembered industry sure to appeal to those with an interest in the area.
