Sounds Like a Plan: The city that powered the Allies to victory in World War II with steel for tanks, battleships and guns paid a price with dust thick air and neglect for civic improvements. Department store magnate Edgar Kaufmann Sr. commissioned two Pittsburgh architects in 1947 to come up with a plan. Going UP: Grasping a crow bar wrapped in festive ribbons, Mayor David L. Lawrence pried the front door frame from a red brick, two-and-a-half story house at 1206 Epiphany Street in the Lower Hill District. Moments later, the real demolition of the building started, and Pittsburgh's most sweeping urban renewal project had begun. In Shining Pride: It seemed all the world came to the Lower Hill District on the Sunday afternoon of September 17, 1961. As the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra played "The Star Spangled Banner," the stainless steel dome of the Civic Arena opened and a shaft of sunlight shot through, cutting across the musicians on the floor below. Icemen: Of all the athletes and performers to grace the Civic Arena, none of them embodied the building like the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins weren't just the building's primary tenant, they got their name from the arena's distinctive igloo design.
