The author Dr. Warren I. Titus states it is a first book on a neglected American author.  This book is the first full-length published account of the writings of the American Winston Churchill.  Not intended primarily as a biography, it shows how the literary works of Churchill mirrored issues that occupied the American popular mind during the years of the writer's greatest acclaim.  As a widely read author who achieved best-seller status with almost every book he wrote-Richard Carvel, The Crisis The Crossing, etc.-Churchill's significance stems from his importance as a representative of an era and as an exemplifier of popular fiction.  This analysis of his published work contributes to the understanding of the American mind for 1900 to 1920.  Churchill's first serious writing endeavors were in the field of historical fiction.  In three early novels, he recorded the panorama of American history during the periods of the Revolution, the Civil War, and the westward movement.  He later turned to political fiction and dealt directly with issues in a way that identified him with Theodore Roosevelt brand of early progressivism.  In his last works, Churchill was concerned largely with social and religious questions these works were not popular with the reading public, they are valuable today because he documented most of the attitudes of the later progressives of 1912 and after.  He nevertheless has important things to say about divorce, American labor and industrial troubles, the status of American women in the modern business complex, and the social gospel.   Dr. Titus  believe that in this work he shows that the thought of the muckrakers and the progressives can be illustrated through fiction as adequately as through journalism and history.
