Rising to prominence in the early 1980s, Julia Wachtel’s (b. 1956) artistic practice focuses on the visual language of mass culture. Like her Pictures Generation counterparts, Wachtel’s work in the early 1980s appropriated popular imagery to critique an increasingly media-saturated society. Wachtel has continued to replicate, manipulate, and juxtapose images in ways that can be unsettling to the viewer. More recently, her use of newspaper and magazine photographs has given way to imagery now culled mostly from the Internet, today’s all-pervasive media engine. This catalogue is the first publication to survey Wachtel’s career, and features 40 color plates of works from the 1980s through today, as well as an insightful overview by curator Reto Thüring, an essay by poet and critic Quinn Latimer, and a conversation between Wachtel and curator Johanna Burton.

This multimedia boxed set presents a sweeping look at work by pioneering German painter Albert Oehlen (b. 1954), one of the most energetic and significant artists working today. Deeply influenced by literature, music, film, and graphic design, Oehlen’s paintings are the result of a complex layering of methods, subject matter, and viewpoints. This distinctive set contains a catalogue of the winter 2016--17 exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art as well as an anthology of texts and images edited by Christopher Williams, a poster, and a vinyl record with a new work by composer and musician Michael Wertmüller, reflecting Oehlen’s singular approach to art-making and the collaborative nature of this publication.

Kara Walker’s work astutely examines race, gender, and identity. Walker’s newest series of large-scale drawings stem from her consideration of monuments and notions of permanence and impermanence following her massive public art project, A Subtlety, in Brooklyn. Influenced in part by the artist’s recent residency at the American Academy in Rome, this series of drawings is an extensive examination of how Walker envisions the rise and fall of society. Richly illustrated, this publication includes plates of each drawing, as well as intimate photographs of the artist at work taken by her partner, acclaimed artist and filmmaker Ari Marcopoulos. An introduction by Reto Thüring and Beau Rutland contextualizes the importance of this latest evolution within Walker’s oeuvre; John Lansdowne addresses the topic of Christian iconography and its relationship to Walker’s new drawings; and Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Tracy K. Smith contributes a new poem. In addition, a text by Walker considers her work within the recent political climate.
