The Chester Plays complete the publi cation of the different series of such productions in the English language hitherto generally known. It is perhaps desirable that the few Single plays of a similar cha racter that are found scattered in different parts should be collected together in a volume, to form a companion to the others. Tiny books on the subject have appeared; different phases of it have been dealt with in magazine articles; and Baudouin, Lacroix, Devlin, W. E. Winks and Mr. S. S. Campion have in various ways laid the industry under obligations; but this is the first attempt to offer a comprehensive view of the subject. Dealing with so vast a period as six thousand years or more, I have been obliged to write compendiously.
