Compendium of material dealing with the experience of the Virginia Central Railroad (later C&amp;O) during the War Between the States. Included are: Articles by Prof. Charles W. Turner dealing with the broad issues of Confederate railroading and how Va. Central fit into that picture. The second section is a series of letters about railroading during the war by a former Virginia Central conductor. His exploits include moving troops and other exciting first-hand adventures. Chapter three deals with the Va. Central lines west of Staunton. The fourth section gives details about the motive power and rolling stock of the Va. Central during the war years, and statistical background on its operations taken from annual reports. Although illustrations showing Va. Central operations during the war are scarce in the extreme, maps and diagrams are used where possible along with photos of equipment used during the war taken in later years as well as material on typical railroad equipment of the era.

Chessie Takes A Train Trip

This is more than just a book with many good color photos, (though it is that), most of which have not been published before. It is also a good history of the era when C&O used the E8s, FP7s and a few other diesels to power its passenger trains during the declining years of passenger service. Its innovative approach to the "passenger problem" is discussed and the cars and service as well as the flashy, colorful trains themselves, are all treated. C&O President Walter J. Tuohy said that he would accept a loss on running passenger trains because they were the best advertising the railway had. He knew many financiers and business people from New York and other eastern cities took C&O trains to the Greenbrier hotel, and saw the level and quality of service first hand. Tuohy felt that this would translate into their confidence in the line's freight operations-- the real moneymaker. So, C&O struggled harder than some others, to keep their trans running well. This books presents good color photography from company files, Gene Huddleston, Tom Dixon, Dorr Tucker and others during this period when C&O want to run good trains but the realities of the marketplace and the hand of history was against it. Despite this C&O's trains were great almost to the very end, even though they shank in number and size as the years wore on. - The book gives complete story of how this all happened.

Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Series #33 Pullman-Standard Lightweight Passenger Cars 1950-1971

This booklet portrays the history of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway at Clifton Forge, Virginia, a site that became important to the railway early in its history and eventually assumed a position as its second most important facility. In 1889 C&O located important shops and yards at Clifton Forge. The yard was expanded in 1923 and reached the height of its importance to C&O. Converted to diesel work and eventually downsized and the shop eventually closed and the yard was downsized as railroading changed it character in the 1970s-2000 era. Clifton Forge is the embodiment of a prototypical American Railroad town, and retains that flavor even today.
