<p>Visions of a World Hungry is a very special book because it helps to fill a very special need. Both Old Testament and New Testament urge us in the strongest possible terms to show love and justice to hungry people. But the problem is so massive that we tend to be overwhelmed, incapable of responding with more than an occasional token contribution of world relief. It helps us perceive hunger not simply through an abstract intellectual exercise, but in our prayers and in personal reflection out of which prayer emerges. Author Tom Pettepiece breaks down the false separation we sometimes create by putting worship in one compartment and social justice in another- usually preferring one to the other, forgetting that both are central to Christian faith. From its inception this book has been a struggle and a joy--a struggle in that dealing with an issue so immense and complex has been like carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. the more I know about how hunger happens and the suffering of individual persons, the more I feel their burden, and the more it seems that relief for all who hunger is a humanly impossible task --and it is, without God. As I have written and spoken on this subject in my ministry, I have gone through periods of depression, guilt, frustration, and doubt both personally and professionally. In trying to organize and select this material , I have had the constant feeling that there is so much more to be said and done. But there has been equal joy. In the last year churches around the world have begun to recognize the impact they can have on hunger issues and have begun to move, although there is still a long way to go. More individuals have a global consciousness and appreciation for their place in the world and their mission as Christians. Those who choose to care, care more deeply.</p>
