Log 43 responds to the many geometries seen in contemporary forms with The Issue of Geometry, a special section guest edited by architectural designer and educator Cameron Wu. Some 25 years after the digital revolution of the 90s, Wu asks, If we are now armed with a more mature understanding of instrumental design tools, how do we reanimate geometry as a design protagonist rather than a mere design enabler or incidental outcome? The architects responses range from Peter Carl's interest in rhythm to Iman Fayyad's perspectival anomalies; from Wes Jones's reassessment of the many relationships of geometry and architecture to Patrik Schumacher's advocating for tectonism; from Andrew Witt's concept of grayboxing to George L. Legendre's form haiku. Wu also offers geometric analyses of five recent buildings, and artist Olafur Eliasson, architect Preston Scott Cohen, and architect Henry N. Cobb talk about their advanced uses of geometry. Log 43 also features essays on architecture's withdrawal from and engagement with architectural austerity, the architecture of crypto mining, and Miesian materiality, as well as a conversation with Japanese architect Hiromi Fujii.

FOBA, an internationally celebrated architectural practice based in Kyoto, looks beyond the aesthetics of minimalism, instead finding inspiration in the relationships between structure and site. In the late 1980s, Japan was awash in seemingly unlimited wealth and rising toward what would be the peak of its modern economic success, power, and influence. In 1991 the same lethal combination of risky loans, inflated stocks, and real estate speculation that created this "bubble economy" caused it to burst, plunging the country into its worst recession since World War II. New Zealand-born architect Thomas Daniell arrived in Japan at the dawn of this turbulent decade. After the Crash is an anthology of essays that draw on firsthand observations of the built environment and architectural culture that emerged from the economically sober post-bubble period of the 1990s. Daniell uses projects and installations by architects such as Atelier Bow Wow, Toyo Ito, and the metabolists to illustrate the new relationships forged, most of necessity, between architecture and society in Japan.

The sophisticated buildings of Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori (born 1946) combine the archaic, eccentric, poetic and the ecological--almost all of them are made of simple, traditional materials such as earth, stone, wood, coal, bark and mortar. Often referred to as a "surrealist" architect, Fujimori designs buildings that stand on stilts, rest in trees, support plant ecosystems and rise from the ground at vertiginous angles. This unique approach perhaps stems from Fujimori's early career as a successful architectural historian; he accepted his first commission at the age of 44. Buildings completed since then include teahouses, museums and private homes, known by names such as the "Dandelion House," "Charred Cedar House" and "Too-Tall Tea House." This publication explores Fujimori's career with models, drawings, architectural plans and photographs. Also documented is the construction of a teahouse designed for the garden at the Villa Stuck in Munich.
