The stories of Hans Christian Andersen are known all over the world and he is one of the most translated authors of all time. Andersen's fame rests on his fairy tales and stories, written between 1835 and 1872, among the best known of which are "The Ugly Duckling," "The Little Mermaid," "The Princess and the Pea," "The Snow Queen," "The Nightingale," and "The Steadfast Tin Soldier." With these fairy tales, inspired by the great tradition of the Arabian Nights and by the brothers Grimm, Andersen became known as the father of the modern fairytale. Moreover, Andersen's works were original. Only twelve of his 156 known fairy stories drew on folktales. This complete collection of Andersen's stories is based on Jean Hersholt's classic translation.
Andersen's stories have been widely illustrated by some of the best-known illustrators of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in particular those of the Edwardian period - the Golden Age of illustration - including W. Heath Robinson, Arthur Rackham, Mabel Lucie Atwell, Kay Nielsen and Edmund Dulac. Around ninety of the stories are illustrated with reproductions of original illustrations from classic Edwardian to contemporary illustrators. In addition, there are thirteen newly commissioned illustrations for some of Andersen's less well-known stories.

This work describes and indexes 1500 accessions made by the Department of Manuscripts of the British Library. Among the medieval manuscripts described are the tenth-century "Benedictional of St Athelwold", the "De Brailes Hours" and the "Hours of Elizabeth the Queen" from the Dyson Perrin collection. Among politicians' papers are those of three prime ministers: Spencer Percival, A.J. Balfour and Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. other notable acquisitions include the "Haig Memorandum", Earl Jellicoe's papers, letters of David Livingstone and Gordon of Khartoum and Captain Scott's diaries of his last ill-fated expedition to the South Pole. Among many prominent literary manuscripts are William Blake's notebook, Coleridge's "Kubla Khan", Oscar Wilde's "De Profundis", and autograph drafts for James Joyce's "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" and "Ulysses". Music is represented by the scores of 20th century British composers such as Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Bax, and by Dohnanyi and Percy Grainger.

This catalogue, which fills the last remaining gap in the printed Catalogues of Additions, covers over 3200 items acquired by the Department of Manuscripts. This high figure reflects the inclusion of some major large collections, most notably 690 volumes of archives from the Society of Authors, the Dropmore Papers comprising 640 volumes relating to Lord Grenville, Prime Minister 1806-1807, and 324 volumes bequeathed by Marie Stopes, pioneer of birth control. Music is much in evidence, particularly with regard to papers of important 20th century composers such as Holst, Elgar, and Vaughan Williams. Significant individual acquisitions include the Trentham Manuscript of poems by John Gower and a notebook of Sir Walter Raleigh. Medieval manuscripts are well represented, notable examples being the Anderson Pontifical, the Customary of the Shrine of St Thomas Becket, and seven manuscripts from the collection of Francis Wormwald, while an outstanding example of medieval illumination is provided by the Wyndham Payne Crucifixion.

The medieval Book of Hours was a richly decorated manual of private devotion comprised of a calendar of saints’ days and eight short services in honor of the Virgin Mary. The Hastings Hours is one of the finest of these to have survived. Intimate in scale and richly decorated with miniatures from the life of Christ and of the saints, it was made in the Netherlands by expert craftsmen during the last quarter of the fifteenth century. 
In this beautifully illustrated introduction to the manuscript, twenty-five of the surviving thirty-two large miniatures are reproduced--close to their actual size--along with many decorative borders and details. An essay by Janet Backhouse explores this outstanding achievement of Renaissance Flemish illumination.
