• A lavishly illustrated book on Russian-born architect and artist André Beloborodoff, and the first monograph published on his work From imperial Russia to the Rome of the 1960s, the work of architect, painter and scenographer André Beloborodoff (1886-1965) expresses his unique vision of the history of modernity. An enlightened Palladian, Beloborodoff designed palaces, châteaux and villas for Café Society patrons using modern construction techniques, such as reinforced concrete. The interior design of the Yusupov palace in Saint Petersburg, the Caulaincourt château in Picardy, and the Villa Pepoli for Maurice Sandoz in Rome - built at the same time as Le Corbusier's Cité radieuse - are witnesses to his timeless, stripped-down and refined classicism. He won the Prix de Rome in 1934, and subsequently spent many years living and working in Italy. Many of his architectural ideals are found in his metaphysical and surrealist paintings and watercolors, highly praised by Paul Valéry, Mario Praz, Henri de Régnier, and Jean-Louis Vaudoyer. His atmospheric vistas of sunken or vanished worlds recall the edifices that Beloborodoff, eternally rootless, was never able to build. Text in French.

Denis Honegger est l’un des plus grands architectes suisses du XXe siècle. Après un bref passage dans l’atelier de Le Corbusier, ce disciple d’Auguste Perret développera pendant trente ans, avec un degré de sophistication inégalé, la doctrine du « classicisme structurel » : c’est dans cet esprit qu’il conçoit l’université de la Miséricorde et l’église du Christ-Roi à Fribourg, ainsi que l’institut de physique de Genève. En France, où il fait l’essentiel de sa carrière après 1945, il est l’auteur de plusieurs ensembles de logements dans lesquels il parvient à concilier industrialisation, langage classique et composition urbaine. La rénovation du quartier de l’église de Pantin, son opération la plus importante, a reçu le label « Patrimoine XXe » en décembre 2008.Comme pour les autres ouvrages de la collection Carnets d’architectes, le texte va directement à l’essentiel et offre un agréable parcours de lecture grâce à une iconographie abondante.
