The International Style project was initiated 18 June 1930 with Henry-Russell Hitchcock &amp; Philip Johnson's plan to write a popular book on modern architecture. With the support of The Museum of Modern Art, a proposal for an exhibition grew out of the project. It was first envisioned as a show of architectural models &amp; was greatly influenced by Johnson &amp; Hitchcock's travels during the summer of 1930. During the sojourn the coauthors saw most of the work &amp; met many of the architects who would be included in their MoMA survey. How would you build a house for a cyborg? The Un-Private House examines this and other questions confronting domestic architecture as the 20th century turns into the 21st. Changes in family structure, shifting concepts of privacy and domesticity, the home as workplace, and the revolution in communications and media have created totally new relationships between exterior and interior worlds. Photographs, plans, and drawings present 26 projects by architectural firms in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Their innovations include spectacular new materials, including "smart skins" through which houses themselves transmit information, as well as structural forms. The houses presented here, and their architects, are not only reconfiguring the domestic landscape but also launching the first architectural debates of the new century.

For the past few years, The Museum of Modern Art has been in the midst of the largest building project in its history. Designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, the new museum will open in midtown Manhattan in November 2004 - 2005 to coincide with MoMA's 75th anniversary. In his initial proposal, Taniguchi explained that his goal was “to create an ideal environment for art and people through the imaginative and disciplined use of light, materials, and space.” His stated vision of “a museum that preserves and reinforces MoMA's unique character as the repository of an incomparable collection of modern and contemporary art, as a pioneer of museums of modern art with a unique historical inheritance, and as an urban institution in a midtown Manhattan location” has been resoundingly implemented. How do you transform an old staple factory into temporary quarters for The Museum of Modern Art? As one of the world's foremost museums prepares to undergo massive renovations, rebuilding, and expansion, an interim space has been created in Queens, one of the five boroughs, to house exhibitions and administrative and curatorial offices. After the Manhattan site reopens, MoMA QNS will continue to be used as a study center and art storage facility. This publication details the renovation process and discusses the building from conception to completion, with images of the drawings, plans, and structure. The architects for the project, Michael Maltzan, Inc. and Cooper, Robertson &amp; Partners, are discussed in terms of their roles at MoMA QNS and their other projects. This boldly designed monograph documents the work of K/R, the New York based architecture/design studio founded in 1984 by John Keenen and Terence Riley. The book brings together a range of projects, both theoretical and realized, designed over the past two decades. It also includes a collection of essays by Riley that were written when he served as the Chief Curator for Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art between 1992 and 2006. A project section highlights 20 works of varying scale--from proposals for urban redevelopment to buildings to commercial and domestic interiors to exhibition designs. Unusual projects include two aviaries in Latin America and a pair of houses in Miami, inspired by Mies's project for a new urban house form, the court-house. Also included is a photographic essay by the artist Tim Davis, who was set loose with his camera in the raw and minimalist K/R-designed offices of Playboy International in Miami Beach. John Keenen is a founder and the principal designer at K/R. He has taught architectural studies at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard, Parsons School of Design, Syracuse University and the University of Texas at Austin, among other universities. Terence Riley, also a founding partner of K/R, is currently the Director of the Miami Art Museum in Miami, Florida.

When German photographer Gerrit Engel moved to New York in 1994 to study architecture, he combed through bookstores in search of a book documenting the city’s most important buildings―not just some eccentric details but each edifice as a whole from the street level to the roof; no fancy photographic distortions but captured as the structures present themselves to the ordinary pedestrian. Having searched in vain he decided to do it himself. Documenting prefabricated housing estates in East Berlin neighborhood of Marzahn, and Buffalo grain elevators, he knew what he was looking for. What he came up with is no less than a typology of Manhattan architecture: 150 buildings in chronological order of their creation between 1793 and 2005, complete with names of the architects and locations. Engel’s brilliant color photographs present a survey of the mix of styles that make Manhattan a unique architectural environment.
