Plus de trente ans plus tard, ce classique de la bande dessinée entame une nouvelle carrière. Mais dans une présentation toute différente : en noir et blanc et, surtout, en petit format. Les éditions Librio tentent de renouer avec une formule – la BD en livre de poche lancée dans les années quatre-vingt. Cette fois, tout est prévu pour garantir un succès. Le prix, d'abord : à dix francs le volume, difficile de ne pas se laisser tenter. La reproduction en noir et blanc et le grammage du papier sont de qualité. L'absence de couleur n'est pas un handicap, bien au contraire : elle permet de redécouvrir les aventures d'Adèle et de profiter pleinement de l'ambiance pleine de mystère du Paris de ce début de siècle, propice au charme du noir et blanc. Enfin, la reproduction des planches respecte le format original et ne nuit en rien à la lecture. Le ptérodactyle peut être rassuré : cette nouvelle présentation n'empêchera pas le lecteur de frissonner à la lecture de ses sinistres exploits… --Philippe Actère

One of the earliest full-length, standalone graphic novels to be published in Europe, and certainly one of the best and most original, Ici Même was serialized in the adult French comics monthly (A suivre) in the early 1980s and then released in book form. A quarter of a century later, this dark, funny, consistently surprising masterpiece has finally been translated into English. An unexpected yet smoothly confident collaboration between the darkly cynical Jacques Tardi and the playful fantasist Jean-Claude Forest (of Barbarella fame), You Are There is set on a small island off the coast of France, where unscrupulous landowners have succeeded in overtaking the land from the last heir of a previously wealthy family. That heir, whose domain, in a Beckettian twist, is now reduced to the walls that border these patches of land he used to own, prowls the walls all day, eking out a living by collecting tolls at each gate. His seemingly hopeless struggle to recover his birthright becomes complicated as the government sees a way of using his plight for the sake of political expediency, and the romantic intervention of the daughter of one of the landowners (who has her own sordid history with the politician) engenders further difficulties, culminating in an apocalyptic, hallucinatory finale.

Released in 2005, West Coast Blues (Le Petit bleu de la côte ouest) is Tardi's adaptation of a popular 1976 novel by the French crime writer Jean-Patrick Manchette. (The novel had been previously adapted to film under the more literal title Trois hommes à abattre, and was released in English by the San Francisco-based publisher City Lights under the English version of the same title, 3 to Kill.) Tardi's late-period, looser style infuses Manchette's dark story with a seething, malevolent energy; he doesn't shy away from the frequently grisly goings-on, while maintaining (particularly in the old-married-couple-style bickering of the two killers who are tracking Gerfaut) the mordant wit that characterizes his best work. This is the kind of graphic novel that Quentin Tarantino would love, and a double shot of Scotch for any fan of unrelenting, uncompromising crime fiction

World War I has long been an obsession of Jacques Tardi's. (His very first (rejected) comics story dealt with the subject, as does his most recent work, the two-volume Putain de Guerre.) In “The Mad Scientist” the science that brought us revived dinosaurs now results in a pithecanthrope stalking the streets of the City of Light, climaxing in an amazing car chase involving a foe from the previous volume. Will the perpetually inept Inspector Caponi just make things worse? Probably. Then in the second episode, “A Dusting of Mummies,” the mummy glimpsed in Adèle’s apartment in previous episodes comes alive! The volume concludes with the sudden startling (and delightful) incursion of some characters familiar to Tardi fans, and a shocking climax that leaves the future of both Adèle and this series in doubt as World War I erupts. (It’s the only story in the entire series not to feature an “in our next episode” teaser.)

Many years ago, Jacques Tardi was introduced to American audiences with "Manhattan," a grim and grimy story of depression, madness and suicide in New York City. Three decades later, New York Mon Amour collects "Manhattan" and three other tales of the Big Apple spectacular collection is this rendered by Tardi with just as much panache and you-are-there detail as his reworks set in Paris or the trenches of World War I. Aside from "Manhattan," the centerpiece of the book is the graphic novel "Cockroach Killer," written by Benjamin Legrand. This violent, surreal conspiracy thriller, starring a hapless exterminator named Walter, remains one of the cartoonist's most startling, confounding works. The volume is rounded out with two short tales, both written by Dominique Grange: "So Hard" (starring John Lennon - but not that John Lennon), and "The Killing of Hung" (a story of revenge and redemption).
