A Personal Memoir: Fragments for an Autobiography integrates the memoirs of Antoni Tàpies, beginning in pre–civil war Barcelona and extending to Francoist Madrid, existentialist Paris, and New York in the 1950s, with historical images from diverse sources, including the family and the artist's archives. Tàpies's reflections on his interactions with such prominent cultural figures as Picasso, Miró, and Duchamp, on his approach to modernity and the avant-garde, and on the historical events of his lifetime—from his birth in 1923 to the 1970s—provide insights into the inner sources and development of his art. Highlighting the close ties between his writings and his visual work, this volume includes a generous selection of both color and black-and-white images that trace the unfolding of Tàpies's artistic language from the 1940s to the present.

The Spanish artist Antoni Tapies first received worldwide recognition in the 1950s for his "matter" paintings: relief-like works composed of dry pigments, sand, marble-dust and paint, which he scraped, incised and pierced. His early paintings have been likened to walls, their graffiti-like scrawls denoting the only means of free expression available under the Franco regime. The artist's later works express less tangible symbols and themes. This volume is the catalogue of an exhibition organized by the Guggenheim Museum, New York, in collaboration with the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris. It presents the essentials of Tapies's art - an original use of texture and materials, coupled with an expression of intense intellectual, political and artistic feeling. The book provides an overview of the artist's life and career, and also includes original translations from the Catalan of four of the artist's principal writings on art.

Antoni Tapies, Spain's greatest living artist, is a leading exponent of "matter" painting, a style characterized by encrusted layers of paint that create an effect of solid relief. His best-known works resemble sections of weathered wall, textured with the traces of time and human endeavor. Tapies has drawn inspiration from a wide variety of sources: the art of Joan Miro and Paul Klee, of Surrealism and Far Eastern calligraphy have played as formative a role as have the music of Richard Wagner and the philosophy of Hegel, Jean-Paul Sartre, and the Far East. He has absorbed these influences to fashion an art of confession, of manifestos and appeals, homages and protests. This overview of an oeuvre marked by the greatest personal and artistic integrity is completed by biographical notes and an extensive bibliography.
