Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: March 24, 1927On another occasion, probably about two years later, after the fame of Jesus had spread throughout the land, He said to the apostles Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while. They crossed the Sea of Galilee, near its northern end, and sought seclusion outside the city of Bethsaida. However, a multitude traveled afoot around the end of the lake, or sea, and Jesus preached to them. So interested and impressed were the people that they remained until near nightfall. They were hungry and the only food found in the company consisted of five barley loaves and two small fishes, which a boy had taken with him to the spot. Some of the disciples suggested to Jesus that He dismiss the multitude and send them to their homes to which He replied: They need not depart; give ye them to eat. (matt.As Jesus directed, the-people seated themselves in groups of fifties and hundreds, numbering about five thousand men beside women and children. Taking the loaves and little fishes Jesus pronounced a blessing upon the food, and then divided it and told the disciples to distribute to the multitude. The material of both bread and fish increased under the Master's hand, so that the entire multitude ate until all were satisfied, and the fragments that remained far exceeded the original amount, for we read that twelve baskets were filled with the surplus.Yet again did the Lord provide a meal in the desert, on which occasion 'four thousand men, beside women and children, were abundantly fed. He blessed and brake the seven loaves and a few little fishes, which constituted all the food at hand; and again the substance was increased to meet the need. In this instance also there was an excess, sufficient to fill seven baskets. It is evident that Jesus pos sessed and exercised the power of organizing the elements, creat ing in the one case wine, and in the others the actual substance of bread and fish. We see how the Christians of the Midwest gradually gained in ambition and boldness, constructing larger churches and temples in successive displays of devotion to the Lord. James E. Talmage used his own status as a member of the Church of the Latter-day Saints to receive access to the interiors of several churches he describes. He photographed the most iconic interior and exterior rooms, noting the differences in style and form present. This book was originally published in 1912, and as such may be considered something of a retrospective on the ascent of Christian belief in the United States during the 19th century.

The Great Apostasy Considered in the Light of Scriptural and Secular History is a 1909 book by James E. Talmage that summarizes the Great Apostasy from the viewpoint of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Talmage wrote his book with the intention that it be used as a teaching tool within the LDS Church's Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association and the Young Women's Mutual Improvement Association. The book is "in many ways quite derivative" of B. H. Roberts's 1893 Outlines of Ecclesiastical History.[1] Both writers borrowed heavily from the writings of Protestant scholars who argued that Roman Catholicism had apostatized from true Christianity.[2] Talmage's book has been described as "the most recognizable and noted work on the topic" of Latter-day Saint views of the Great Apostasy. The Great Apostasy has gone through many editions and continues to be published by Deseret Book, a publishing company owned by the LDS Church, and "is regularly referenced today" within the LDS Church. Along with Talmage's other classic works Jesus the Christ and Articles of Faith, The Great Apostasy has been of the few non-scriptural books that full-time LDS Church missionaries are encouraged to study. However, it is no longer part of the "approved missionary library.
