نشر هذا الكلام فى الصحف والمجلات، وخيل إلى أن عهدى به قد انقضى، وأن صلتى به قد انقطعت، وأن أحداً من الناس لن يذكرنى به، ولن يحدثنى فيه. 
ولكنى فيما يظهر كنت مخطئاً فيما ظننت، فقد تحدث إلى كثير من الناس وألحوا فى الحديث، وكتب إلى كثير من الناس وألحوا فى الكتابة، كلهم يريدنى على أن أنشر هذه المحاضرات مجموعة فى كتاب. فلما كثر الإلحاح على فى ذلك واتصل، لم يسعى، كما كان يقول المتقدمون، إلا أن أجيب الطالبين إلى ما طلبوا، وآذن فى نضر هذا الكلام. 
وقد قرئت على هذه الفصول، فإذا هى تصور آرائى فيما تناولت من موضوعات الحديث عن الشعر والنثر، وإذا هذه الآراء لم تتغير أو لم تكد تتغير إلا قليلاً. وقد نبهت على ما تغير منه فى موضعه. 
أما بعد. فإنى أرجو أن يجد الذين يقرءون هذه الفصول لأنفسهم فيها نفعاً، وأن يجد الذين يلتمسون العيب ويجدون فى البحث عن الهفوات، ما يمكنهم من أن يكتبوا فيكثروا والكتابة ويقلوا فيطيلوا القول. وأرجو آخر الأمر أن يوفقى الله إلى ما أتمنى عليه دائماً من أن أكون نافعاً محمداً.
