To be unashamed of Anglicanism implies an understanding and appreciation of the contradictions and strengths of the Anglican inheritance. The first part of the book looks at Anglicanism's roots, and explores five aspects of its inheritance of faith, specifically in relation to the sacraments and ministry. Stephen Sykes acknowledges his Anglican forebears, and shows that the classic documents and writers of the Anglican past, including Thomas Cranmer, Richard Hooker and George Herbert, contain truly inspiring richness of theological insight The second section argues that Anglicans, contrary to popular belief, do have unique doctrines of their own which must be openly stated. He offers suggestions of the ways in which these doctrines can be explained and examines the questions of the Anglican understanding of the Church, and attitudes to power and authority. In the final section, the Anglican tradition is 'put to work' as Stephen Sykes expounds an Anglican theology of evangelism, showing that there can be a biblical approach to evangelising which rests in the Anglican tradition of liturgical praise. Fittingly, he ends with a piece on the 'genius' of Anglicanism - the distinguishing temper of mind which characterises it - concluding that while Anglicanism may be struggling to preserve its identity, its failings and weaknesses are far from mortal: 'Provided Anglicans recognise contradiction when it occurs, and do not fail to appreciate the depth of other traditions, their own tradition can be an astonishing joy and liberation.'

What is Christianity? Do the differences between Christians matter? Professor Sykes demonstrates that there has been conflict inherent in the Christian Church at every stage in its life and that this disagreement is not accidental or occasional but intrinsic and chronic. But the solution does not lie in finding neat doctrinal definitions. On the contrary, the author shows that conflict, far from being an evil, is actually desirable, and is inseparable from the actual form and content of Christianity. It can be seen in the origins of the movement in the New Testament itself. The different views of Jesus and the inward and personal nature of religious experience raise the problem that no theological definition about the external aspects can be immune from the challenge that it fails to do justice to the real substance of the faith. In Power and Christian Theology, Stephen Sykes examines the ambiguous role played by the concept of power in Christian theology.  Centuries of experience of the abuse of power have taught us to be instinctively suspicious of it.  But can a faith which celebrates a 'God of power and might' dispense with it entirely?In the history of theology, and based in the Scriptures, are to be found diverging tendencies; one which sees no difficulty in the affirmation of divine power and its human embodiment, the other in which power is radically re-thought.  In early modern Europe power was given new, realistic expression, and the discipline of sociology was born.  Theology has had consequently to face new problems.Stephen Sykes argues that it is not credible to attempt to dissociate Christian faith from the phenomena of power in their entirety.  He holds that human beings are enmeshed in a deeply ambiguous context, a world of overlapping and intersecting powers.  The dangers which inevitably accompany the use of power are better avoided by their explicit recognition, than by heroic exercises of self-deception.
