This volume explores the changing process of evaluating objects during the period of Japan’s rapid modernization.\nOriginally published in Japanese, Antiquarians of Nineteenth-Century Japan looks at the approach toward object-based research across the late Tokugawa and early Meiji periods, which were typically kept separate, and elucidates the intellectual continuities between these eras. Focusing on the top-down effects of the professionalizing of academia in the political landscape of Meiji Japan, which had advanced by attacking earlier modes of scholarship by antiquarians, Suzuki shows how those outside the government responded, retracted, or challenged new public rules and values. He explores the changing process of evaluating objects from the past in tandem with the attitudes and practices of antiquarians during the period of Japan’s rapid modernization. He shows their roots in the intellectual sphere of the late Tokugawa period while also detailing how they adapted to the new era. Suzuki also demonstrates that Japan’s antiquarians had much in common with those from Europe and the United States.\nArt historian Maki Fukuoka provides an introduction to the English translation that highlights the significance of Suzuki’s methodological and intellectual analyses and shows how his ideas will appeal to specialists and nonspecialists alike.

Japanese architect Shuhei Endo can be defined as an architect of steel, since he distinctly favors this material in the buildings he designs, continually experimenting with its infinite possibilities. His works are apparently weightless and communicate a sense of liberty: undulating sheets of steel are twisted into spirals and wrapped around buildings in overlapping layers, like petals of flowers, or arranged on different levels to create a membrane around open spaces. This approach is most evident in the "great roofs" that house Endo-designed offices, such as Rooftecture N (Nisinomiya, Hyogo, 1998), or spaces for relaxation and meetings, such as Rooftecture T (Fukui, 1997), as well as private homes, such as Springtecture H (Harima, 1998) and Rooftecture M (Maruoka, 2001). Born in 1960 in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, he graduated in 1986 from the Kyoto School of Art and then joined the Osamu Ishii &amp; Biken Associates architectural studio. In 1988 he founded the Shuhei Endo Institute in Osaka and began teaching at Kinki University, Kobe Design University, and the Fukui Institute of Technology.

Builders of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the tallest building in the world at the date of its completion--though Chicago's Sears Tower stills wins in the "highest occupied floor" category--Cesar Pelli & Associates is one of the world's most important architectural firms today. Established in 1977, the firm is a full-service architectural practice of some 80 persons and has worked with corporate, government and private clients to design major public spaces, museums, airports, laboratories, performing arts centers, academic buildings, hotels, office and residential towers and mixed-use projects throughout the world. Unlike the work of other notable twentieth-century architects, the work of Cesar Pelli is not constrained by a personal style or a signature, as any viewer can ascertain through careful consideration of his built structures. Rather, each project is designed in keeping with its intentions and specificities--hence the Islamic-influenced geometrically polygonal plan of the Petronas Towers in Malaysia (and its 32,000 windows!). Sections thru a Practice offers a unique analysis of the diverse and significant work of Cesar Pelli & Associates, recipient of the American Institute of Architects' 1989 Firm Award and 1995 Gold Medal. With an approach conceived by Bruce Mau Design, the book draws upon the firm's entire body of work, including its innovative and collaborative approach to the design process, to reveal themes that cross in multiple and distinct directions. By describing a series of these themes, the shape of the firm's practice becomes evident, offering a richer, truer rendering and understanding of the firm's work. Essays by Joseph Giovannini and Hiroyuki Suzuki cover Pelli & Associates' recent work and work in Japan, providing insight into both the firm's current and broad global practice. Photographs of nearly 200 projects, both built and designed, have been filtered by these themes to present a visual coherence and rationale for each.
