Zhou Enlai was a leading figure in the Chinese Communist Party, Premier (1949-76) and Foreign Minister (1949-58) of the People's Republic of China, who played a major role in the Chinese Revolution. He became one the great negotiators of the 20th century and survived internecine purges, always managing to retain his position in the party leadership. Zhou's life is the history of modern China. Through his experience we can see dramatic change unfolding; the galvanizing Long March, the social convulsions of the Great Leap Forward, the violent excesses of the Cultural Revolution, and the diplomatic rapprochement with the West. Han Suyin, whose mother was Belgian, has drawn on many meetings with Zhou, his widow and the memories of hundreds of ordinary citizens to create a social history and a portrait of a leader whose political legacy continues to influence the course of China today.

The events of Chinese history between 1938 and 1948 are vividly reconstructed in this third volume of Han Suyin's autobiography. The story of her unhappy marriage to a fanatical army officer is told against the background of the appalling confusion and corruption of China at that time: the Japanese invasion, the misery and squalor of the retreating Chinese, the activities of Chiang Kaishek and his 'Blueshirts', the violent prelude to revolution. Ill-treated and misunderstood, Han Suyin goes to work as a midwife in Chengtu, and it is there her career as a writer begins. Later, unable to have a child herself, she adopts a daughter. When her husband becomes military attache in London, Han Suyin follows him there and she describes in fascinating detail her life as a diplomat's wife in wartime. In 1944, she enrolls as a medical student and, after qualifying, she spends a year as house surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital. As the Chinese civil war turns into revolution, Han Suyin, now a widow, returns to Hong-Kong. Han Suyin's narrative is not merely the affecting and extraordinary life story of a woman of immense courage. In the way that if brings to life more powerfully than ever before the spirit and politics of China, it is a significant contribution to the history of our time.

Lhasa, the Open City: A Journey to Tibet

In October and November 1975 Han Suyin visited Tibet, the region of China which lies next to her own province of Szechuan. Her family in Szechuan had had links with Tibet for over two centuries, and Szechuan itself harbours a great many Tibetans, whose families have lived there for ten centuries or more. This was the first time since 1962, when the English journalist Stuart Gelder and his wife Roma visited Tibet, that a visitor from abroad was admitted to the region. Han Suyin's book is all the more valuable because it traces the changes which occurred during these intervening years. The photographs she took show not only the temples and monasteries of this fabulous region, but also the new industries and the countryside. Han Suyin also traces the historical background of Tibet, dating it back to the seventh century when the laws of the Chinese Tang dynasty were adopted by the Tibetan Kings. This book will clarify many issues about Tibet which have remained obscure, and also show how the Tibetan people are now actively participating, at all levels, in the running of their own autonomous region. Han Suyin's is a book for those wishing to discover what Tibet is really like today.
