A remarkably versatile man, Jan van der Heyden (1637-1712) was the preeminent painter of cityscapes in the Netherlands and the first artist to capture all the beauty of the urban scene. Notwithstanding his achievements as an artist, Van der Heyden was even more famous in his own time as an inventor and engineer: he invented firefighting equipment that set the standard throughout Europe for two centuries, and he perfected the streetlamp. This is the first book in English devoted to Van der Heyden. It includes recent discoveries about his fascinating life and offers an introduction to his ravishing art.The book includes a general discussion of Van der Heyden’s work, entries on 40 of his paintings, illustrations of about 100 of his paintings, as well as supplemental drawings and prints. Focusing mainly on the bustling city of Amsterdam, he also recorded other Dutch, Flemish, and German cities with a brilliant palette and exceptionally detailed technique. Often innovative in his composition, he was the first artist to create imaginary scenes by rearranging existing city views and known buildings.

Jan van der Heyden: 1637-1712

Jacques Goudstikker (1897-1940), a Jewish Dutch art dealer, took over his fatherâ€™s gallery in 1919 and quickly made his presence felt. Introducing a more international thrust to the gallery and demonstrating a keen business acumen, Goudstikker became one of the most successful art dealers and tastemakers in Amsterdam between the Wars. He entertained lavishly and highlighted his wares in his country homes and gallery while also developing relationships with collectors and museums at home and abroad. Tragically, Goudstikker died in flight from the Nazis in 1940, and his enormous collection of art, including more than 1,200 Old Master and nineteenth-century paintings, was confiscated by Reichsmarschall Hermann GÃring. Not until 2006 was a portion of this looted art returned to Goudstikkerâ€™s heirs by the Dutch government. 
Featuring some 200 color illustrations, this book examines Goudstikkerâ€™s legacy, reveals the dramatic story of the seizure of his art, and discusses the legal case that finally brought its restitution. Forty works from his collection are catalogued in full detail.

George and Maida Abrams amassed perhaps the finest private collection of Dutch Old Master drawings in the world. This catalogue presents a selection of these superb works, and explores the role of drawing in the creative process in Rembrandt's studio and wider circle. 
The artists featured include Ferdinand Bol, Govert Flinck, Samuel van Hoogstraten, Jan Lievens, and Nicolas Maes: the key figures in Rembrandt's circle, who at times were deeply influenced by his remarkable style and on other occasions explored different approaches. Their works range from figure studies to landscapes, from narrative and biblical scenes to lively genre scenes. At the heart of the catalogue are ten exceptional drawings by Rembrandt, including two highly finished landscape drawings and a variety of figure studies. The accompanying text is written by two leading scholars of Dutch art, both of whom have worked closely with the Abrams collection.

Dutch and Flemish Seventeenth-Century Paintings: The Harold Samuel Collection

The Harold Samuel Collection, comprising eighty-four seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings, has been described as the finest private collection of such works to be formed in Britain this century. It includes paintings by such masters as Frans Hals, Nicolaes Maes and Gerard Dou, acquired by Lord Samuel for his personal pleasure and to hang in his home, Wych Cross. The Collection was bequeathed to the Corporation of London in 1987 to be hung permanently in the Lord Mayor's Residence, Mansion House. The refurbishment of Mansion House has provided the unique opportunity for an exhibition tour, during which the Harold Samuel will be seen by many for the very first time. Coinciding with the exhibition, a complete catalogue of the Collection has been compiled by an acknowedged expert, Peter C. Sutton. This book is the permanent record of a small but extremely important collection of paintings, which will delight scholar and amateur alike.
