<p>The goal of the exercises in the workbook is to facilitate the acquisition of fundamental grammatical skills in Japanese, including basic grammatical and sentence patterns, vocabulary items, and particle use, along with other characteristic features of the language. In addition, a number of discourse and  composition exercises provide the student with ample opportunity to express his or her own ideas and opinions, or talk about him-/herself, as the situation demands.  As with the text, the workbook recognizes the importance of mastering the written language as well. To help the student along, a larger, easy to read typeface is used for the beginning lessons. Directions for each exercise, given in English at the beginning of the book, are later given in both English and Japanese, and towards the end, almost exclusively in Japanese.  Answers to the exercises are printed at the back of the workbook, except for those exercises asking for students' own thoughts or opinions, etc.</p>

<p>The JAPANESE FOR EVERYONE textbook includes a total of 477 kanji (464 Educational, 13 Everyday Use). KANJI BOOK teaches the student these 477 kanji, plus an additional 48 Educational Kanji and one Everyday Use Kanji (indicated by * * ) , for a total of 526. KANJI BOOK is comprised of dictionary entries and drills. Dictionary entries give the entry kanji, its readings and meanings, examples of words and expressions in which it is used, together with an indication of proper stroke order. Only the most important (from the viewpoint of the beginning student) readings and meanings are given for each kanji, with less frequent or special readings omitted. Of the readings listed for each kanji, the essential ones are given in boldface type, and it is suggested the student try to master these first. Drills are included after every 14-24 kanji, and are aimed at improving the student's reading and writing ability. Exercises deal with basic readings of individual kanji and commonly encountered compounds, and the student is urged to learn to read and write all items that appear. Moreover, grammatical patterns and expressions used in the drills correlate to lessons in the JAPANESE FOR EVERYONE text, so that KANJI BOOK serves as a general review.
