A central feature of many ancient traditions was the shaman--part priest, part magician, part savant--whose ability to traverse unseen realms often meant the difference between life and death. Susan Seddon Boulet took a strong interest in shamanism, studying with noted cultural anthropologist Angeles Arrien. Her finely detailed portraits within portraits, merging human and animal forms, evoke the multidimensional world of the shaman. Ancient cultures around the world respected a variety of creatures as higher beings who took animal form on Earth. They were thought to have protective powers, such as healing the sick or guiding people through battle. Before the written word as we know it, these cultures often told tales of their animal spirits through drawing or painting. Artist Susan Seddon Boulet interpreted many of these spirit animals (and more) in her dreamlike paintings of ancient, mythological, and fantastical creatures. Artist Susan Seddon Boulet (American, b. Brazil, 1941–1997) took a strong personal interest in the shamanic world, creating evocative works that fused the spirits of people and animals. The shaman, the oracle, the healer—“the one who knows”—is in mythical communication with these spirits, controlling and manipulating nature through supernatural powers. Inspired by her readings about shamanism and by her personal shamanic journeys, Boulet drew upon her spiritual visions to present, in exquisite detail, the creatures that inhabit the inner dimensions of the mind. Her paintings offer an artistic expression and understanding of shamanic practice—an exploration of the subconscious world. Twelve of Boulet’s paintings have been selected for this calendar. Each is accompanied by an excerpt from a Native American song, chant, poem, prayer, or narrative.
