<p>One of the first books that allowed me to visualize that the High Desert of Oregon was covered with lakes, good hunting and fishing for first humans to arrive in North America, south of the Puget and Canadian glaciers, inland away from the subduction zone tidal waves, and up the tributary rivers from the killing cataclysms on the Columbia. Back when the seashore was thirty miles west of the present one.</p>

The Corps of Discovery's exploration of the western United States between 1804 and 1806 resulted in a vast amount of information about the peoples, birds and other wildlife, and flora the expedition members encountered. This book pairs excerpts from the Reuben Gold Thwaites edition of the "Lewis and Clark" journals with images of landscapes and artefacts, allowing readers to better see and understand the explorers' journey from the Rockies to the Pacific Ocean. Many of the historic photographs show sites that have since been transformed or eradicated by geological or human forces. Emory Strong was a mechanical engineer and amateur archaeologist and pre-historian. Ruth Strong was a teacher and a vocational botanist. Herbert K. Beals is a historian of maritime explorations of the Northwest Coast.
