This is Nicholas Storey’s third book in the series, following History of Men’s Fashion: What The Well Dressed Man Is Wearing (2008), and History of Men’s Accessories: A Short Guide For Men About Town (2011) and is called History of the Sporting Life: A Short Guide to Some Sports and Pursuits For The Man of The World. This book, also with historical and social background, covers: the conduct of sporting events, including recommendations for a selection of sporting equipment, being all the necessary equipment for: shooting, fishing, hunting, tennis, badminton, squash and golf; something of members’ sports’ clubs; town and country living; town and country national and international sporting and social events and festivals; road, rail and sea travel; as well as exciting or unusual Christmas holiday destinations. In line with the first two books, this one is also packed with quirky facts and interesting digressions; including an account of the peculiar facts surrounding the last recorded civilian duel in England; a sketch of the life and death of Regency figure Robert ‘Curricle’ Coates; even how to build a rose garden; to all of which is once more brought a humorous approach. World experts on the technicalities of certain topics covered have again been sought out to check over the draft to ensure that this book is not just amusing but soundly backed by authority. The book ends with an account of a memorable night spent in London.

This idiosyncratic book takes the reader on a fascinating journey, from high-end grooming and care, including open razors, strops and Belgian waterstone; silver-tipped badger shaving brushes, shaving soaps and D R Harris's Pick-me-up, loofahs and sponges, through colognes and scents, including history, constituents, triggers and individual colognes, then into dressing accessories, such as slippers, watches, cufflinks and shirt studs, and tie pins, even how to assess precious stones as well as a fascinating account, from primary sources, of the evolution of the dinner jacket-Tuxedo. Moreover, if you want to know not just how to mix drinks but something of their history, as well as the history of beer, cider and mead; sweets of all kinds, chocolate, tea and coffee; matching food and drink (and not just food and wine) and then every essential fact about tobacco, pipes, Havana cigars, cigarettes and snuff, it's all here, as well as where to buy the products that are mentioned. But it does not stop there. The journey continues on to a consideration of some of London's fascinating venues, including pubs, clubs, restaurants, hotels and bars; some nice points of conduct and the author's reflections on such things as feminine wiles (what women really look for) and even how to stop a fight. There is a chapter on selecting and buying gifts for the lady in your life, a dictionary of Anglo-American sartorial terms and it ends, as it begins, with thoughts of England as home. The author has submitted the book in draft to the scrutiny of leading world experts on the various topics and so, as well as being entertaining, it is backed by authority.

In selecting my adventurers, I have had to find limits. The first has been to confine my selection to men and women who are (at least loosely) British and, even then, service and adoption have sometimes, as with Krystyna Skarbeka, taken the place of birth, and I have chosen to ignore such things as competing national claims for Tenzing Norgay. The second limit that I have set myself is generally to exclude heroic adventurers in battle, simply because there is (rightly), so much already written about them, but I have found place for certain (representative) secret agents of the Second World War, whose acts (in voluntary service, beyond the call of simple duty), surely took them out of the arena of straightforward battle and into the realm of the most individual and courageous adventure. The result of these decisions remains to be judged but the overall objective has been to renew interest in the lives of some of our real heroes and heroines, as representative of the many others that there are; in an age in which contemporary sporting and pop art ''heroes'' dominate the news and provide the only readily evident ''inspiration'', and also an age in which addiction to the computer screen nearly robs the young of memories and dreams of high adventure; of which ripping yarns are born. The third limit is a limit of time: this speaks for itself; otherwise how&nbsp;would Drake and Raleigh, Clive of India, General Woolf and Captain Cook not have found their places? There have to be such limits. The final limit has been to exclude those who are widely famed already: what more is there to say of General Gordon or Dr David Livingstone of Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Captain Laurence Oates; even though what has been said should often be repeated? Moreover, although Sir Edmund Hillary is acknowledged as the first conqueror of Mount Everest; Tenzing Norgay was there with him and what of George Mallory who, some time before had died, either going up or coming down? To those who might accuse me of having been obscure, I just plead that my purpose has been to bring back into ready remembrance certain men and women, not widely &#712;fêted now, who had great impact upon the accrual of knowledge of: other peoples, their customs and their countries; or who have striven, often against various obstacles (including the odds), to promote exploration and, sometimes, even to preserve life and liberty for others. To the erudite, who might say that I shed little new light and that the coverage is uneven, I plead, in mitigation of sentence, that my principal purpose has been to remind of worthy lives that might still stir our blood; and to bring them together, as representative of our adventurous people, in one handy volume.
