This work focuses upon women who have not merely produced comic texts, but used their comedies to examine laughter itself as a problematic issue. Whether to embrace laughter wholeheartedly, whether to do so in a cautious and limited manner, or whether to forswear it entirely - women's opinions and, indeed, feminists' opinions have seldom been in accord on one answer. For women writers of the 20th century, a century of activism, laughter has been something to be weighed carefully in terms of its ethical, political and pragmatic relationship to feminist values, as well as its ability or inability to help women survive. Rather than offering an exhaustive survey of all comic fiction produced by women over the 20th century, the book examines a few texts in depth, especially those that have been excluded from the usual canon. It argues for the importance of reading little-known, lost or undervalued books by women, and for seeing these so-called "minor" texts as shedding light on major questions, including how female writers have found ways to reshape genres traditionally reserved for or defined by men. Among the figures discussed are late-Victorian feminists and their modern British successors, ranging from Dame Rebecca West to Anita Brookner and Bombay-born lesbian fantasist, Suniti Namjoshi.

Legacies of the Comfort Women of World War II

The stories of the former comfort women have galvanized both Asian and non-Asian intellectuals working in a variety of fields. Scholars of Asian history and politics, feminists, human rights activists, documentary filmmakers, visual artists, and novelists have begun to address the subject of the comfort system; to take up the cause of the surviving comfort women's sturggles; to call attention to sexual violence against women, especially during wartime; to consider the links among militarism, racism, imperialism, and sexism; and to include this history into 20th-century political history. This volume contains a cross-section of responses to the issues raised by the former comfort women and their new visibility on the international stage. Its focus is on how theorists, historians, researchers, activists, and artists have been preserving, interpreting, and disseminating the legacies of the comfort women and also drawing lessons from these. The essays consider the impact and influence of the comfort women's stories on a wide variety of fields and describe how those stories are now being heard or read and used in Asian and in the West.

This volume uses materials drawn from the Mark Samuels Lasner Collection at the University of Delaware to offer a new interpretation of the significance and prevalence of the portrait image during the final decades of the nineteenth century in Britain. It focuses on how and why representations of writers' and artists' faces circulated through the periodical press, through exhibition spaces in London, and through book publishing, while it looks at the ways in which audiences learned to "read" these faces for information about masculinity, femininity, class status, and especially for an understanding of the concept of "genius." Margaret D. Stetz's work highlights throughout the importance of Oscar Wilde as the writer who best exploited the new market for portraits in advancing his own career, but moves beyond him to consider the broader topic of writers' and artists' faces as objects of idealization, caricature, and also of close study by the general public. Aubrey Beardsley, 150 Years Young&nbsp;charts the meteoric rise of Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898), a monumental figure in book and magazine illustration, graphic arts and poster design, as well as the history of gender and sexuality. During Beardsley's brief career, which was cut short by his death from tuberculosis, he was a brilliant innovator in the British art nouveau and decadent movements, creating daring black-and-white images for periodicals such as&nbsp; The Yellow Book&nbsp;and The Savoy,&nbsp;and for books published by the Bodley Head and Leonard Smithers. He was equally famous as the consummate bad boy, using his images to satirize Victorian norms of conduct and to push gender and sexual boundaries. This book highlights the rebellious and insouciant quality of his art and writing, celebrating the eternally young Beardsley. Featuring letters and drawings, rarely seen posters, periodicals, books, photographs, and ephemera, Aubrey Beardsley, 150 Years Young includes original designs for The Yellow Book and The Savoy, illustrations for Oscar Wilde's&nbsp;Salome, and a recently discovered Beardsley drawing of a key that would be featured on the back cover and spine of Keynotes, a notable 1893 volume of bold feminist stories by George Egerton.
