Virtually a first census from ALL available tax lists, delinquents, miscellaneous taxes from the State Archives plus lists from newspapers showing names found in tax lists.

Newspapers may be the only source of data about marriages missing from civil records; often they reported parents' names, location of the ceremony, minister or J. of P. Especially valuable marriages of Missourians which took place outside the state, shown in "hometown" papers.

Many important details not found in civil records appear in this collection, from about 50 newspapers and covering a wide area. Most idenitfy the brides’s father or a parent - "second daughter to Ezekiel, of Spencer Co., KY.", "daughter of Edwin, deceased", fomerly of Hardin Co., TN." A vital clue often missing in courthouse papers is the "Mrs." preceding the bride’s name, many brides were widows. Another useful category are records never found in courthoses because they are from "BURNED" countiesor reports of marriages which took place outside of the state. Old newspapers may be the only possiblesource of such information. This book contains 1,400 marriages reported from all over the state; about 300 were outside of Missouri, some as close as Illinois and Kansas, others as far away as California. They include a number of odd, interesting and very human sidelights.

This book sequels two previous books from the same author covering the same period (MO23 & MO24). This book differs from the other two volumes in that: some, primarily adults, are from papers not available for the earlier books while the remaining balance of the book deals with children previously omitted due to space limitations. Counties from which these papers came from: Pike County Missouri;Cooper County Missouri;Howard County Missouri;Chariton County Missouri;Lewis County Missouri;Boone County;Missouri;Marion County Missouri;Clay County Missouri;Callaway County Missouri;Jackson County Missouri;Cape Girardeau County Missouri;Cole County Missouri;Lafayette County Missouri;St. Clair County Missouri;Platte County Missouri;Andrew County Missouri;Greene County Missouri;Buchanan County Missouri;Benton County Missouri;Grundy County Missouri.  The records cover a long period, from baby Harriet Penrose who died in St. Louis in Feb. 1810 to deaths on both sides of the state (Kansas City, St.Louis) and numerous places between, in 1857.  Most of the children and many women could not be found in a census; they were born and died before 1850, or born before 1850 and died young.

But there were at least 85 newspapers in existence in the state, at one time or another, during the period covered by these records; and very often a death notice appearing in one would be picked up by one or more of the others. So, even when some of the newspapers are lost (and many are) we still have news from their areas. These records, taken from 42 newspapers, include adults and children old enough to have appeared in the 1850 census, together with probate notices for some "burned" counties, notably Chariton, Dallas, and St. Clair. Some records, not available in the initial preparation for the book, are found in the ADDENDA starting on page 261
