Letters of St. John Chrysostom: Homilies on Gensis, 18-45 (Fathers of the Church (Hardcover))

St. John Chrysostom delivered his "Homilies on Genesis" sometime between A.D. 385 and A.D. 388, while still a priest at Antioch. In the homilies in this volume - the last of three - Chrysostom concludes his examination of the lives and virtues of the Old Testament patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph as recounted in the last three chapters of Genesis. Known for his eloquent preaching, Chrysostom delivered these final 22 homilies after Pentecost. His motive for examining the accounts of the lives of the patriarchs is to show how the just forebears of the Israelites, in a time when both the Law and the Gospel were yet unpreached were able to live Christian lives with only simple trust in God and the balanced, almost ingenuous, manners of antiquity. His interest in the events and characters of Genesis is largely moral, even moralistic; he tends to see Scripture as hagiography. His style of commentary, although not really thorough exegesis, arises out of his deep conviction of the divine inspiration of Scripture, hence the habitual attention to detail, "not idly or to no purpose" being his frequent comment on the precision of the text. As an exegete, Chrysostom may seem disappointing to those grounded in the methods of modern biblical scholarship, since he largely ignores any sense of Scripture other than the literal and is generally unaware of how to resolve difficulties and appreciate subtleties that a knowledge of the original text would provide. What he lacks in scientific accuracy, however, he more than compensates for with his earnest practice of pastoral care. This final volume of the homilies includes a general index for these volumes and an index of biblical citations, the latter indicating the rich scriptural diet Chrysostom's congregation - who came daily for his homilies - enjoyed.

None of the Fathers of the early church is better known or loved than St John Chrysostom, and none of his works is more popular than On the Priesthood. Its stylistic brilliance demonstrates the appropriateness of St John's enduring title, the golden-mouthed. Yet the rhetorical eloquence of the work is not simply camouflage for lack of substance. As Graham Neville observes in his Introduction, Chrysostom had a mind both practical and idealistic, that brought into close connection the evils and injustices of the world and the perfection of moral life demanded by the gospel. Chrysostom's unique gift for linking concrete observation and theological vision is nowhere more evident that in On the Priesthood. Its presence helps to account for the work's power to inspire and challenge Christians in all ages.

Christian tradition often seems to give only grudging approval to the married life, particularly its sexual aspect. In these sermons of St John Chrysostom we find an important corrective to this view. Although himself a monk, Chrysostom had a profound understanding of the needs of his congregation. Inspired by the epistles to the Corinthians and Ephesians, he discusses the reasons God instituted marriage: primarily to promote holiness of the husband and wife, and only secondarily to produce children. Chrysostom goes on to discuss sexual relations, the mutual responsibilities of marriage, and parenting. While parts of Chrysostom's sermons may seem limited to his own time, the vast majority of his advice has timeless relevance for the Christian family.

From Wikipedia: The Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom is the most celebrated Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine Rite. It is named after the anaphora with the same name which is its core part and it is attributed to Saint John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople in the 5th century. It reflects the work of the Cappadocian Fathers to both combat heresy and define Trinitarian theology for the Christian Church. The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was probably the divine liturgy used originally by the School of Antioch and was, therefore, most likely developed from West Syrian liturgical rites. In Constantinople, it was refined and beautified under John's guidance as Patriarch of Constantinople, (398-404). Having become the liturgical form of the Church of Holy Wisdom, Hagia Sophia, it became over time the normative liturgical form in the churches within the Byzantine Empire. The two liturgical rites of St. John Chrysostom and St. Basil in the Eastern Church became the norm by the end of the reign of Justinian.
